Grown-Ups
* Old Fashion Yarn Dolls

Materials needed:
1 skein of yarn (color for doll body)
1/4 skein yarn (color for doll hair)
scrap material pieces for clothing
darning needle
thick cotton thread or colored twine for face.

Start by getting a large piece of cardboard or book to use for wrapping yarn around. Cut seven small pieces of yarn, about 6" long, lay aside. Place one of these pieces of yarn on the top end of the cardboard or book. Holding the yarn from the skein in place on the other end, start wrapping yarn around the cardboard or book. Should wrap about 150 to 200 rounds till you get the desired thickness for doll. End at same end you started and cut. Leaving yarn around cardboard or book, get the small piece at top end tying very tightly. Tie a slip knot in end of short piece so it will fit over a door knob. Carefully slip yarn off cardboard or book, place small piece over door knob so yarn hangs. Cut the bottom looped edges of the yarn. Use another small piece to tie around the top as if making the head, tie tightly. Now section off yarn for doll's waist using another small piece. (Be sure to save space so that the arms will slide through the body section between the neck and waist.) Under the waist line, divide the yarn equally, braid each leg, then tie off with another small piece of yarn. Using the cardboard or book again, wrap yarn as above for arms but don't get too thick. (Do not use a small piece at top end as you did the body.) Tie one end with another small piece of yarn, braid to other end, tie off with last small piece of yarn. Slip the braided arms through the doll's body section between the neck and waist. Trim off excess yarn from arm and leg ends to your desired length. Using a smaller object, wrap hair color yarn as you did for the body and arms using a small piece of yarn as you did for the body. Tie the small piece very tightly before slipping off object, then cut other ends so the hair is like a pom-pom. Use the small stands of yarn to tie to doll's head, or sew the hair onto head at top center. I also sewed my doll's hair around the neckline for more control. You can use small glue-on eyes and etc for the doll's face or make it more primitive looking by sewing the face on with colorful threads. This is your choice. Use the scrap pieces of material to make the doll's clothes or add finishing touches. Note: this pattern is used for a boy or girl doll. You can variate the pattern by not braiding for plain girl dolls, just tying arm ends, neck, and waist, leaving from the waist down open like a dress. Finishing the dolls up in primitive, country, or southern styles make them adorable and are a great craft selling item.
