Poodle Skirt Applique
Lay out your circle skirt flat on a bed to decide where you want to place the Poodle. Using the Poodle graphics below, print out the all three graphics. This first explains the layout and numbers of the pieces. The second is to be used as the pattern for cutting pieces out. The third is the finished graphic showing how your Poodle should look.
Print out the full size graphic making sure you have your printer set to "actual size," not "fit to page." (The printed poodle graphic should measure 5 & 1/2 inches tall and 6 inches wide at longest points on your paper.) The pictures below are thumbnails of the original graphics. Please do not save these thumbnails. Click on the thumbnails to view original graphic. (Tip: If you rest your mouse on the pic for just a few seconds a little orange "resize" button will appear at bottm right side of pic, click on it to view actual size of 500 x 500.) Print out original graphic and click "back" button on your browser to return to this page.
Using your Poodle Pattern graphic, the pic in the middle, carefully cut out the pattern keeping the pieces in order as shown on the Layout graphic, the first pic. When all pieces are cut, start pinning the blue pattern pieces to the black material and cut out, keeping pieces organized. (Note: If you have the skirt on, Poodle is usually positioned next to the bottom left side of skirt. See finished picture below.) Next, pin and cut out the green pattern pieces from the faux sheepskin fabric, lay aside seperately. Cut out the pink pattern pieces from the sheepskin fabric, keep seperate from the green pattern pieces. Starting with the (green cut) head & shoulders sheepskin fabric, position on skirt and pin in place. Now use the black nose, body, and two front leg pieces and pin in place around sheepskin fabric. Be sure to slightly slide these pieces under the sheepskin edges before pinning. Proceed with the other (green cut) sheepskin pieces, pinning in place, slightly sliding them over the black fabric. Using the (pink cut) sheepskin pieces, place the tail fluff, front leg fluff, and back top leg fluff, in place and pin, making sure to slightly overlap the black pieces. Going back to the black pieces, start pinning the two front feet and then the two back leg middle sections in place. Keep black pieces slightly under the fluff. Finish the two (pink cut) sheepskin fluff on the back leg bottom pieces, pinning slightly over the black fabric. Last, pin the two back feet into place, slightly under the fluff.
Carefully put your skirt on again to make sure Poodle parts are positioned to your preference. If not, place skirt back on bed, loosen pins and move slightly as desired. You may have to put the skirt on several times checking to make sure your Poodle is properly positioned. When it is just the way you want it, unpin all three green cut fluff pieces, the head & shoulder piece, the front right leg piece, and the back top left leg piece, set aside. Next unpin all the pink cut pieces keeping them in order. You are now ready to start sewing your black pieces to the skirt. Keeping them pinned in position, sew edges of all the black pieces to your skirt. The stitch you use for doing so will depend on the fabric type you selected for this. You may wish to straight stitch by hand and then do the border stitch on a machine. This will help keep your pattern in place while using the machine and pin can be removed after straight stitch. Either case, your choice on stitch style used.
After all black pieces are sewn on, get the green cut pieces you set aside. Carefully reposition these pieces, slightly over lapping the black ones and pin in place. Once properly positioned, start hand stitching the edges, keeping them straight as you go. (Leave a small opening on the edge where the neck and shoulders meet for leash.) I do not recommend machine border stitching on these pieces due to the fabric type. But again, it's your choice. When finished, pin all the pink cut pieces in place, slightly over lapping on the black fabric. Hand stitch all edges. Looking closely at the third and finished graphic of the Poodle, notice how it has a crown fluff on it's head and an oblong ear. Using the left over sheepskin fabric, cut these two pieces to fit on the head & shoulder fluff, using the pattern below. Place ear in position and pin, then place crown fluff slightly over lapping the top of ear and pin. When you have these positioned properly, sew the top edge of ear in place (under the crown fluff). You can either choose to just tack ear in certain places or stitch around the edges. Next stitch the crown fluff in place making sure to remove all pins. Now get the 4-5 foot piece of flat black cord trim for the leash. Starting at neck and shoulder area, where you left a small opening on the fluff, slightly slide one end of the leash cord under the fluff and pin about two inches outward. Assuming you placed the Poodle on the front left side of skirt, according to finished picture below, decide how you want the cord to twirl as it goes up to top right side of waist line. Pin in place as you go. Put the skirt on again to make sure you have the leash where you want it, if not, keep repinning and putting skirt on till it's positioned properly. Once leash is where you want it, start a straight stitch up through center of cord. Sew both ends across so they won't later raise up from skirt fabric. Go back to the open place of sheepskin fabric where the leash was inserted and stitch closed. Now you're Poodle Skirt is all finished and you're ready to go! To make your look complete, tie a pink scarf around your neck, put hair up in pink ponytail holder, use pink bobby socks, saddle shoes (black and white oxfords), loafers, or flat white tennis shoes, a nice white sweater blouse. To add an extra nice touch to your sweater blouse, applique a small Poodle on top left side or applique your initials, one in pink, other in black. Craft submitted by: Libby
